An Electromagnetic Pulse or EMP is an extreme burst of electromagnetic energy originating from the blast of a nuclear bomb. People often are not aware that devices can be damaged by EMP. It is highly improbable that a nuclear attack will happen but there are still a multitude of causes of EMP that you should be aware of. EMP has various sources including from lightning, electrostatic discharge, meteor EMP, coronal mass ejection, power line surge and from nuclear and non-nuclear EMP. Right now, the United States having war with another near pear rival is highly unlikely, however, a lot of militaries right now are developing EMP based weapons to knock down the competition.
Any EMP attack would disrupt vital systems across the US including airports, railways, communication, the electrical grid, vital medical facilities, stop lights, sewage and many industrial facilities. The Graham Commission was tasked about researching the vulnerabilities of the country from threats such as these. They have concluded that the vital electrical services should be stored in protective installations in order for the country to remain functional even after a nuclear attack. They discovered that the existing infrastructure would likely crumble immediately and completely if an undesired event such as this would happen. The commission also found out that the civilian population is also woefully unprepared for such a disaster. As an individual, you can do a few things to prevent your own devices from being damaged from EMP. Using Faraday container made of aluminum or copper would protect any device from EMP damage. Having a galvanized metal trash coated with thick cardboard can also be a useful EMP shelter.
An interesting way of protecting your electronic devices from EMP and electrical interference is by using EMP resistant bags known as Faraday bags. The concept of Faraday containers began with the idea of protecting essential devices such as laptops, tablet computers and phones from the effects of EMP, and now using EMP resistant bags, hence the name Faraday bags. It might seem a little paranoid to get one for yourself but having such a bag in the event of an EMP calamity would likely make you better off the many other people. Right now, it is better to be prepared by using EMP protection which will make you one step ahead of everyone around you.
